Strathallan Estate

Seat of the Viscounts from c1225 - a branch of the Drummond family, of whom three were attained as Jacobites. In 1910, the family sold the estate to Sir James Roberts and during the First World War the castle, with its fine gardens, was used as a Red Cross convalescent hospital for wounded soldiers. After the rigours of the trenches, it must have been a pleasant refuge. Scottish troops enjoyed teaching reels to their nurses. In the Second World War, Strathallan Castle was a school for girls evacuated from Glasgow. The estate and castle still belong to the Roberts family and continue to be an inviting family home and setting.
